2/6/12 UPDATE: The Manhattan Supreme Court overturned Ms. Rubio’s firing.
Original story: According to Gawker, Christine Rubio, a Brooklyn grade school teacher, is receiving a lot of attention and could be Facebook fired for posting insensitive comments about her students after a recent tragedy.
After a recent tragedy in which a local grade school student died at the beach, an exchange between Ms. Rubio (who has 15 years of teaching experience) and a friend, included:
“After today, I’m thinking the beach is a good trip for my class. I hate their guts.
Minutes later, a friend responded,
Wouldn’t you throw a life jacket to little Kwami?
A hypothetical question about a specific student: Surely this will rouse Rubino from her murderous revelry!
No, I wouldn’t for a million dollars”
Gawker reports that Ms. Rubino’s actions are being investigated and that she may be fired. One defense she offered is that a friend logged into her Facebook account and made the posts, not her.
